Challenges & Lessons Learned

Equipment & Materials

Limited availability of cable extensions, projectors and HDMI/VGA connectors across schools, alongside shortages of flipcharts, marker pens, plain and coloured paper, scissors and glue.

Scheduling

Session start delays due to changing school schedules, and some schools offering as little as 60 minutes per session.

Programme Framing

Some male students felt excluded from participating because of the programme's name, despite wanting to learn.

Funding & Recognition

A language barrier in some sessions, limited funds for facilitation costs, and no formal way to reward especially active students in class.

Conclusion

SmartGirlz in ICT 2022 impacted 274 students across 8 secondary schools in Dar es Salaam, giving them hands-on experience in Human-Centered Design and software development while inspiring further studies and careers in ICT. A second phase was planned for the 3 winning teams to turn their prototypes into working products.
